I much prefer the fictional places:
nation-states that no longer operate;
storybook lands dreamed and illustrated;
specialized creations for scenic routes
and tours, related only through the breadth
of the mapmaker’s imagination.
There’s no difference really between the
mountains of Moria and those disgorged
by the Pacific Ocean floor; until
I’ve stood at their peaks, they can be no more
than symbols to me, theoretical
examples of what grand tremendous feats
the physical earth is capable of,
truly appreciated from above.
